Classes
FOR THE LOVE OF DRAWING
Beginning Drawing Class / Intermediate Drawing Class Advanced Drawing Class
When you draw, you are touching the world in an original way. There is less between the hand and that which it meets than any other process.
Drawing is a mode of perception, so intertwined with what we see, the two can hardly be separated. We’ll be working with a method of drawing that enables you, by conscious volition, to shift your perception, and engage in seeing more deeply.
Drawing is the art of noticing, a discipline by which you constantly rediscover the world. Noticing new things puts you in the present, it’s the essence of engagement.
You’ll learn the concepts and techniques fundamental to creating drawings. Each week a new concept or technique will be introduced and integrated. The class is structured so that each participant is able to assimilate, at a comfortable rate, that which is relevant to personal self-expression and goals. As drawings progress, we’ll focus on determining and developing those skills particular to strengthening each individual’s work. Focusing on the language of form, we’ll be drawing from life.
ONLINE CLASSES Students will set up their weekly still life(s) comprised of a subject matter relevant to each lesson. The objects will be easily accessed; a variety of everyday produce such as tomatoes, apples, and lemons, kitchen items such as cups, bowls, bottles, and spoons, and leaves and flowers found in the garden, a bouquet from the market, and house plants. Assimilation will occurnaturally, and over time, as we progress through the course. As we increase our comprehension of the process and skills, we’ll work with increasingly complex subject matter. We’ll begin each class with a critique of drawings completed by each student. This is important as we learnfrom one another and the small group size allows for ample individual attention.
LANDSCAPE DRAWING for Beginners
Have fun exploring the expressive potential of drawing the landscape!
The visual world is filled with complexity. You’ll be supported as you explore your artistic vision, editing to include the level of detail you deem essential, and to eliminatethe extraneous. You’ll learn to do this both when cropping your compositions, and when developing your rendering techniques. For our purposes, we’ll maintain the goal of giving your drawing the descriptive structure necessary so that it is perceived as the selected subject.
You’ll explore the power of suggestion, and the fundamental role it plays in this genre. You’ll learn how to create depth with atmospheric perspective. You’ll be introduced introduced to drawing with graphite powder and discover some of the amazing effects you can create, including ambient light.
The class is structured so that you are able to develop through weekly experimentation. As you work in a variety of techniques, you’ll determine which you prefer, and how you might combine them effectively when rendering the myriad of elements of which landscapes are comprised.
We’ll be working from master’s drawings, paintings, and photographs.

Workshops
FOR THE LOVE OF DRAWING / Drawing as a Path of Meditation and Mindfulness
When you draw, you are touching the world in an original way. Awaken to the extraordinary and transient nature of form. Learn drawing methods which create meditative and mindful experience. Enjoy relaxed, alert awareness and a pleasurable, rather mystical activation of the mind.
Drawing is a curious process, so intertwined with seeing that the two can hardly be separated. It is a mode of perception, and a shift in perception enables anyone who can write his or her name to draw. We will be working with a method of drawing that enables you, by conscious volition, to make that shift. The visual, spatial, and relational will come forth and you will engage in seeing more deeply.
Drawing is the art of noticing, a discipline by which you constantly rediscover the world. Focusing on the language of form as we draw, we will engage in pointed mindfulness. For the time being the split between the observer and the observed will diminish.
Engaging in creative activity can create greater mindfulness in all of our endeavors as one experience informs the other. Mindfulness is the process of noticing new things; when you do that it puts you in the present, it’s the essence of engagement.
